How to Choose the Right Virtual Number for Your Use Case
A practical guide to picking the right number type, country, rental period, and platform compatibility — so you don't waste money on a number that doesn't fit.

All virtual numbers fall into three functional categories. This guide walks you through every decision you need to make before purchasing.
SMS-only vs Voice-enabled Numbers
Understanding the three main categories will save you from buying a number that doesn't support what you need.
- 📞Calls only — typically local numbers or a virtual equivalent of a landline. A good fit if you need voice communication without SMS.
- 💬SMS only — exclusively mobile numbers with no VoIP telephony connected. These come in two important subtypes: local and international
- 📱SMS and Calls — fully featured numbers for those who need both SMS and voice calling. Most of these are mobile numbers. In the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico, local numbers are also available — and they work the same way as mobile numbers, with full SMS and calling support.

Short-term Rentals vs Long-term Numbers
The minimum rental period is 1 month, the maximum is 1 year. Once the year is up, you can keep using the number by renewing it monthly through the auto-renewal feature.
Why we recommend long-term rental
- 🔒Reliability — the number is yours for an extended period, and you won't risk losing access to it.
- ⏱️Convenience — no need to track expiration dates or remember to renew.
- 💰Savings — discounts of 10 to 20% depending on the rental period you choose.

Choosing Numbers by Country and Platform
By country
The majority of our numbers are international, meaning they work the same way across all countries and platforms with no restrictions. That said, it's worth thinking through your use case before purchasing.
By platform
Most services accept any number, but there are a few things to watch out for.
Major platforms — WhatsApp, Telegram, PayPal, Google, and similar — deal with large volumes of fraud and fake account creation. As a result, they have sophisticated systems for detecting virtual numbers, and only a limited set of numbers will work with them.
You can find an up-to-date list of supported platforms at our Platforms page. It covers several dozen of the most popular services and is updated regularly. If a service you need isn't listed, just reach out to our support team — they'll check it for you.
Business vs Personal Use
Any number available on our site can be used for personal or business purposes — whether that's a corporate phone line or a work account on a third-party service.
Beyond the numbers listed in our main catalog, we also work with a range of countries not publicly available on the site: Germany, Austria, Belgium, France, and others. These numbers are available exclusively for business clients and require supporting documentation — proof of company registration and other paperwork (contact support for the full list of requirements).
Business clients can also request a test number before committing to a purchase — a good way to verify compatibility with your target platform or service.
Checklist Before Purchasing a Virtual Number
Before placing your order, run through these points — it takes just a few minutes and can save you from unnecessary costs and frustration.
- ✓Decide on the functionality you need — SMS, calls, or both?
- ✓Check the number type — if you only need SMS, make sure the number is international rather than local (especially if you'll be messaging contacts in other countries).
- ✓Verify platform compatibility — particularly if you plan to use WhatsApp, Telegram, PayPal, Google, or other major services.
- ✓Choose the right country — do you need a local number for a specific service or region, or will any international number do?
- ✓Decide on the rental period — if you need the number long-term, locking in a multi-month plan with a discount is the smarter move.
- ✓If you're a business client — check whether your target country is available in our extended catalog, and request a test number before purchasing.
